If you have decided that paralegal work is for you, check out all of your educational options before signing up for classes. You can take traditional college classes or online paralegal courses, on your path to your degree. Then you need to decide how much time and money you have, or want, to invest in your education. Depending on the option you choose, training can take anywhere from three months to four to six years. The American Board Association (ABA) mandates that all paralegal programs include 60 hours of class room work with at least 18 of these hours dedicated to law and the legal system. The most popular paralegal degree aspired to in college is the Associates Degree. The associates program is a two year stint and in addition to the legal classes required, the student also will take general education classes in math, English, science, business, communications. In addition to the Associates degree, there are also Bachelor's Degree programs which are four year programs and Master's Degree programs which is usually another two years of school following the Bachelor's program. If you are looking for online paralegal courses that offer certificate programs, they are available too. The certificate program can last anywhere from three to twenty four months. Some of these are intended for individuals that already posses an associates or bachelor's degree. Although there are some that only require a high school diploma. With this degree or certificate the options are many, some work in general law, health care, real estate or criminal law. There is some talk that paralegals need to be licensed not just certified but this is just beginning to be a concern. At this time, following graduation, the paralegal takes a test to be certified.
